LABELS on the mind

A few years back, I purchased a box of printed clothing labels for the line, TAESSA CHORNY. The box is looking pretty low these days (yippee!) which has me exploring new ideas for the label.

All I know so far is it must be woven (aka stitched). I skimped last time, and will never do it again. It's almost embarrassing to put a printed label on such a beautiful dress.

Rectangular, square, small, bigger, tone on tone? Not sure of all these elements yet... but in the meantime have gathered a few designer favourites I found this morning on net-a-porter.

Love the clean simple black stitch on a white label... timeless

Appreciate the old school fashion house label as well...

Tone on Tone... tricky but so clean looking...

a little more contemporary, appreciating once again where it's made... not sure how Toronto would look (not as romantic as Paris and London is my thought)

When designing pieces, comfort is always essential.
Something can look fabulous, but if the woman doesn't feel good in it, what's the point? I'm not a fan of pain for looking good, never will be.

A 1970s vibe wool knit fabric I snagged up this week for the perfect long sweater. Wear it with jeans and cute fall booties (while you can) or dress it up with some cozy tights and heels (I prefer the former).

Best of all, the suede elbow patch detail (I'm so stuck in another decade). In store this week available in all sizes (extra small - large) and through moi as always!

Frocktail and Hunting...

A dress I donated a few days ago for the annual Frocktail Party, a fun evening filled with ladies (and a few men) bidding on pretty designer dresses and sipping cocktails. I've been doing some hunting of my own lately, for fabrics of course! The gorgeous prints I am finding in Little India (on Gerrard Street) are heavenly. I am getting the vibe though that the ladies don't like me much, they'll have to get use to me. It took a while for the fabric shops downtown to know I will ask them if I need help, otherwise, please leave me be... to walk around and daydream.

Celebrating some dear friends' wedding last weekend on the Toronto Island! I wanted to share a photo of myself and the bride, Wendy... I loved how she did a wardrobe change for late night, and in one of my own pieces (something blue). I was thrilled when I saw her in it.

Me in my own as well, a one off though- a black and white striped strapless mixed with a flowy silk print that I've been saving in my basement since I found it in a Manhattan fabric shop years ago.

Set on a rock in Newfoundland, surrounded by their closest friends and family, Amrita & Bill were married this Saturday August 6, 2011.

Amrita was a fabulous custom client. We met this February over an evening coffee downtown.
A former gallery owner was to marry Bill, a skateboard park designer. What a cool couple!

When it came to designing the dress, she knew she didn't want the "white dress". She was happy to include red in the dress, to pay respect to her Indian background, but it didn't need to be the focus. She wanted happy and joyful, plenty of colour, and a fabric to show her personality as well as her love of art. At one point we even debated having an artist friend of hers paint on silk, but in the end found this fabric that became an instant love for both Amrita and myself.

With a coral silk lining, a fun detail to the dress included a slit up the left leg that peeked through the beautiful coral colour.

I snatched up the photo of the happy couple from a guest's twitter account (hope they don't mind).

Studio Store Dreams

It's been a while since I've babbled, but I'm back with my thoughts. As I lounged on the beach a few weeks back, I've daydreamed and reflected about work life and future aspirations, the studio/store dream. So where did this come from?

About a month ago, my man requested I meet him downtown to check out a space.
My response, "for who, for what" not thinking he could be talking about me, but he was. We met outside the studio/storefront (windows covered in Kraft paper), but next door to it was an adorable little shop of the same size. I fell in love, and that's all I've been thinking about since.

The space (ultimate location) is out of budget. But with all this talk lately, it's the next step in my adventure of a fashion business. A space accessible to my clientele whenever they want to shop, when they're in the mood, not to be dictated by my rare seasonal events. A space where they feel more comfortable to walk in and discuss their ideas and have them come to life, plus a rack or two of the ready-to-wear.

Please keep your eyes out for a tiny little studio storefront space for me. And as always, still open for business here at home for any dress idea you may have, and in the stores with fun summer dresses.

Below, a few essentials to my pretend studio store.

Fashion Dreams (and my first nightmare)

Not sure what you dream of, but a lot of the time I dream of clothing. Usually my recurring dream goes like this...

I see a girl wearing something amazing (usually it's someone I know), and throughout the entire dream I am mad at myself for not designing the piece myself, it's all I keep thinking about. And then I wake up, relieved, extremely happy that it was a dream and that I can still design that piece.

Last night, I had my first Fashion Nightmare. I walked into one of my shops and saw all of my dresses in a clothes hamper on the floor. I asked the owner why my clothing wasn't hanging on the rack, and he says,

"Taessa, we don't really like your stuff anymore!"

I start crying and trying to justify keeping my dresses in the shop, but as I start pulling out dress after dress, I see some haven't been hemmed, others are god awful ugly, and none of them make any sense (think rainbow lace with matching fringe).

I try to convince him to keep them, but I keep thinking, I have to take these home with me and fix them.

I don't remember how the dream ended, but I can say that it's been one of the worst dreams I've had in a while.

Fashion Experiment

I wore a new dress of mine this week twice: first to an Art Party and second to a Mother's Day lunch. The first night I wore the dress a gentleman walked up to me and said,

"there's only two things that caught my eye tonight- first was a piece of art hanging on the wall, and second was your dress!"

When I wore it yesterday, instantly my aunt requested one for herself.

Why did I mention that?

At some point this weekend my man suggested that I take a walk on Queen St. at least once a week wearing a dress of mine. The idea of the experiment is to walk into shops, meet new clients perhaps, talk with other girls about fashion, and mainly to be a walking mannequin for the clothing line.

So I've decided Fridays will be Fashion Experiment Days. From Queen East (my hood) to the West, King St. in between, and some days Bloor. I'm hoping to see some familiar faces along the way!

And with the beautiful weather we've been having lately, we're due to end each experiment day with park lounging, bevvies in hand, and in a fresh Taessa Chorny dress!

Can I bring back the Tupperware Party (but Fashion)?

I have been invited this Sunday to an afternoon ladies party-
a Fashion Tupperware party (that's what I'm calling it).
I show up to the home with a sampling of my latest collection, and women preview, try on, and ideally purchase.

Some ladies have contacted me recently wishing that they could have come to my last show, asking what is next.

Today I pondered an idea- would ladies feel comfortable coming to my home to view the line, try on clothing, and buy?

And, what would be needed to make this a successful event?

Here's what I'm thinking:
- a space to change (and to be honest, not the bathroom)
- a good full length mirror (I have my eye on you, damn! why is restoration hardware so expensive?)
- music, snacks, and cocktails
- a clean style-y home (and I think mine is)
- last but not least, the boys must leave!

Wondering if you ladies would like something like this? Perhaps a Saturday and Sunday soon?

In Praise of Slowness

The Slow Fashion Movement has finally gained its "cool" these days, and I'm hoping that people consider embracing its philosophy and principles as easily as they spend a few hundred dollars at a restaurant of the same school of thought.

Myself as a designer, I guess I've always been in praise of Slow.
My line is about quality, not quantity, about the woman who invests in a piece of clothing with my label knowing that it has been made well, with care, given the proper attention to detail, and a beautiful piece that will stay in her collection for years to come.

A bonus of being a part of the Slow Movement is that I've been lucky enough to get to know many of the women who have invested in my love, my line.

May I propose the next time you're in the mood for something special... take it slow.

Post Show Interview

A video interview from last night's aaah-mazing show at Palais Royale just minutes after the show ended. It begins with the first designer of Andy Hall and then progresses into my interview with Spiro Georges Mandylor of It's All Style To Me. In this video I am wearing one of the pieces that was on the runway. It's a one shoulder maxi dress, blue with white dots, with a brown leather and gold buckle side detail at the hip. Both the men and ladies seemed to love that dress last night.

Less than one week till my second show (ever), and this is me

And what have I learned from the first that I can bring into this show?

#1 Don't let any models leave your site before the show, especially to have a quick drink at the bar!
#2 Always have my wing-woman with me. Lucky for me, she's back from Scotland for a few weeks and will be by my side throughout the panic, chaos, and doubts.
#3 Don't worry about the little things... people don't notice!
#4 Do what I like, don't take orders from others. It isn't my show "technically", but it is a reflection of me, so make sure I don't do anything I am not comfortable with.

Still though, I worry about people excited for the show. Why?

It's like they say it's better for people to not expect much and be pleasantly surprised over expectations high and them not met. I'm not sure if the ladies will dig what I'm feeling these days, and I do hope they go along for this ever-evolving journey with me... but what if they don't?

Can you lose clientele based on one show? I worry about these things.

p.s. On a completely different note, sometimes i feel like an old soul, and find my style reflects this. Another is perhaps my love for and always calming feeling when I listen to music like this... makes me relax, reflect, and close my eyes for a few minutes. My man played the entire soundtrack on the weekend, and while I was in the middle of chaos, I couldn't help but stop everything, shut off the sewing machines and take it in.

It must be played so loud that everything else disappears for that moment.

Lessons

I seem to do it each season, every year, and it drives me nuts each and every time. I get so hung up on it, it becomes the focal point, the centre, the glue for it all to work beautifully. In an instant, it is taken from me.

The way I was taught in school, and in the same way I continue creatively, I establish a concept. For me, the idea, the story begins with the fabric. Many designers look to arts and culture, history and politics, travel and adventure, even other designers for the inspiration to their collection.

My creative process begins with the ultimate fabric. I find one that I am completely in love with, can't take my mind off, and build up the rest from there.

The instant that it was all taken from me was this morning. The fabric I first fell in love with, the ultimate, is gone, sold out, discontinued... the glue slowly un-glueing (is that a word?)

I'm not sure how I find myself in this position time and time again. Is it my indecision, my need to become absolutely in love with everything (some might say obsessive)? Yes, yes, and yes.

Lesson learned, I hope (if it consumes my thoughts and it's a good thing, grab it fast).

I contemplated including a picture of the fabric, but can't. It hurts still. In the morning, I'm off to find its replacement.

Wedding Weekend

as did our own abilities for taking any decent photos (I blame the delicious wine and late night bubbly).

I'm usually not the biggest fan of models who become singers (case in point, Irina Lazareanu) or singers who turn to acting (too many to list), but when I heard model Karen Elson sing for the first time watching the über exclusive Tom Ford S/S 2011 video with this song as the background, I fell in love.

Wedding Day Essentials Kit

With so much going on during the last few weeks leading up to a wedding, I created an essentials kit for my bride when I deliver her dress this evening. The kit includes:

1. Safety Pins, Needle and Thread~ just in case of any emergencies, always good to have on hand.
2. Pink Champagne~ should be #1 on the list for when the bride and her bridal party are getting ready (but not on an empty stomach, or we'll have a stumbling bride).
3. Static Guard~ in between all the layers of chiffon, silk, and tulle, we want a flowy dress not clinging to the body.
4. Lint Roller~ a great dress refresher (chiffon tends to attract everything)
5. Tide to Go~ amazing at getting rid of any small stain, and can fit in the bride's or maid of honour's purse.

And in the case of this wedding, the bride gets one last essential, moi!

Body Language

If you've ever been in love, felt its crazy intensity, the comfort it brings, the feeling of two bodies intertwined and becoming one, you understand this. When I look at this piece, The Lovers, moments flash through my mind and heart.

Last Fall I attended a good friend's (Catharine MacIntosh) art show, Body Language. An evening of her lino blocks celebrating sexual spontaneity, fun, magic and intrigue, and perhaps the subconscious coming alive. This piece has been transfixed with me ever since...

I hope it reminds you of a moment, a someone, a love.

the 11th hour...

It is the home stretch with my first wedding dress of 2011. It has been a collaborative process between myself and the bride for the past six months. With only three weeks left to the big day, last night we changed the dress all over again.

Am I mad? Hells no!

The Wedding Gown is the ultimate dress in a woman's lifetime, and with such ultimateness the beauty, romance, and fairy tale of this special day need to be translated through this dress.

I've been reassured that on occasion these last fittings can have drastic changes. It can be anything from the bride going down a dress size, to realizing a greater vision of what we really want. With this gown, we've gone from an elaborate seventeen layer skirt to a more demure seven. We've learned through this process what flatters best, what looks the most elegant, and what makes our bride smile.

And this is what we want the most, for Michele to smile all day and into the late late hours of the night.

Gone Skiing (Swoosh Swoosh)

but somehow Brigitte Bardot could pull it off and look babe-a-licious!

I'm off to Vermont for an extra long weekend...
Can't wait for the fresh powder, maybe some snowshoeing, long walks in the woods with the dog, copious amounts of après ski beers and lounging in the sun (see below),
relaxing by the fire, laughs, and the fresh air!

Ombre Love

Ombre
n. A French term meaning "shaded." Usually a multicolored stripe, with colors graduating from light to dark.

This term was unknown to me until a few nights ago when a couple of ladies came by the house for a dress fitting, with their stunning ombre hair (♥ Steph). Next morning I was selecting fabrics from a manufacturer, and which one did I fall most in love with, a matte silk that started at one end in peach, then faded to nude to brown... and it's name, Ombre.

I think the love for all things ombre is the uber relaxed look and feeling, a carefree nonchalantness, something women love to love. We try to achieve that effortless-cool-thrown-together feeling, which in turn translates our mood and personality. I'm not quite sure how this look is perceived by men, but one thing I do know is us women dress for one of two: ourselves and other ladies, or men.

My guess is this one is for ourselves.

p.s. contemplating the ombre look for my hair, just not sure if I'd get bored of it, and not in blue...

A cute little mention in Sweetspot.ca came about today about le CAPE from the Fall 2010 Collection. I've always loved this site for finding gems in the city, from restaurants to fashion to boutiques and galleries just opened! The site highlights the best of the best in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Calgary.

le CAPE is still available online in two luxurious mohair options (camel and black) and each cape is uniquely detailed with a vintage buckle and leather.

Perhaps not the season today for a cape, but spring will be here before you know it...

Merry Christmas... again!

Tonight I will celebrate Ukrainian Christmas Eve and tomorrow Christmas (we go by the old calendar). We will have a big 12 course meatless dinner, and loads of Vodka and caroling. Our family also dresses in traditional Ukrainian blouses and shirts, all hand embroidered and brought back by family from Ukraine.

I usually only wear these blouses for special occasions, but think I will bring one out of the closet this summer and wear it with jeans. They're so feminine and delicate, works of art on their own...

We all go through thinking about and creating resolutions around this time of year.
Perhaps over champagne late tonight or when we wake up with that god awful headache tomorrow.
Nonetheless, I've been compiling mine over the past few days, thinking about it a little more seriously than years before. They say it's good to share your resolutions with others, so why not share with the world my ambitions for the clothing line for the upcoming year...

1. CATCH UP

The rest of the fashion world works at least 6 months ahead of the real world, and I always feel a bit behind. By this time next year, I would love to be working on my Fall 2012 line, not still wrapping up the Spring line.

2. BE NOT AFRAID!

Every once in a while, I am asked why I don't show at Toronto Fashion Week, and find myself always thinking the same thing, I'm not ready! And I'm not ready just yet, but I would like to attempt that leap of faith this year.

3. HOLT'S

Holt Renfrew is the ultimate for me! To see a dress of mine in the Bloor window would be absolute heaven (heck, I won't be fussy... I'll take Yorkdale or Sherway). By this time next year, I would love to be on their radar and up for consideration.

4. COLLABORATE

There are many many many talented artists/designers/thinkers/creators here in Toronto.

I've had the chance to play with a few, would love to meet many more.

5. BECOME THE GO-TO GIRL FOR A DRESS

I would love love love to be known in Toronto (and hopefully further) as the girl to go to when wanting a special dress. I love designing custom pieces for ladies. They are always a bit more challenging, but from the initial meeting, to designing and fittings, I enjoy every moment in creating these dreams into real dresses!

There they are, hold me to them... Enjoy the rest of 2010 and the beginning of a great New Year!

The 12 Days of Christmas Contest Giveaway

As you may or may not know, a few pieces from the F/W Collection are available online through Ukamaku, a site that showcases and sells Toronto fashion. They are having a promotional contest that has already begun, The 12 Days of Christmas Contest Giveaway.

In a nutshell, on each of the 12 days a designer is selected with a piece from their collection to be given away. I cannot tell which day is mine, but it is this week! I cannot tell you which piece either, you will have to stay tuned...

It's easy to participate too. On my day, all you need to do is write a comment on Ukamaku's Blog why you like it/love it/want it/need it, and the next morning I select my favourite blog entry (can be a total kiss ass or you can write something to make me laugh), and the best one wins.

Pretty Lady

Snapped up a photo yesterday (pardon the quality) of Georgia, the owner's wife of Model Citizen (where you can find my pretty pieces). Georgia is a trendsetter all her own in Kensington Market. Her style is always feminine and full of vintage gems, but I noticed an influence from her other half, Julian, yesterday (a touch of masculinity seems to be a big trend these days).

I have myself channelled Annie Hall, but find Georgia does it best! Holiday perfection!

I would love it if for one day our city streets were covered with snowmen (women and children too)! If we all got a piece of the street downtown, mine would be right around where I frequent most, the Fashion District (Queen & Spadina). Grabbing fabrics from all the shops, some accessories too (thinking beyond the carrots, pipe, etc)... I wonder if others would join in? I wonder what their snowmen would look like?

We need a snow day (like when we were kids)!

My man left me for a week or so (for work) to Russia, and the good man that he is always asks me what I would like brought back. From this trip I requested the classic wooden doll in a doll, a matryoshka. It's only been a day now since I acquired my new gift but find myself opening and closing her all the time... there's something so exciting about the discovery of something hidden.

Which got me thinking... wouldn't it be great if I could do that with a dress? A dress inside a dress, perhaps a beautiful slip? It's easy to find a beautiful dress anywhere, but one that has another dress inside it, what a lovely surprise! If you don't know me well, I'm meticulous (I've heard from some a tad obsessive), but I do believe that there are those of us who appreciate not only what's on the outside and can be seen by all, but what's hidden can be even better.

I am attempting one for spring!

Keg Parties (for a good cause)

With the upcoming Fashion Week here in Toronto, I am excited to see some shows, go to parties, but am a tad sad I'm not showing. In the past years, I have been a bit pessimistic about Toronto's Fashion Week, but am positive these days of the possibilities and opportunities that Toronto holds within the world of fashion.

My man had a great idea last night to make sure I'm a part of it next year... keg parties! Lots and lots of keg parties to raise enough funds for a beautiful runway show... Why not? We used to do it to pay the rent in university...

A jam-packed weekend full of family, friends, and most of all... Champagne!
We don't all get to celebrate our Champagne Birthdays, lucky for me, I did. It has been my go to drink for quite some time now, hence, a celebration ever so fitting. The champagne fountain was flowing on Friday Night, tons of food to feed our drunken' bellies, and then we did it all over again on Saturday Night. One of the most fun weddings ever celebrating great friends!

What a great night Friday was at Tabula Rasa... first Fashion's Night Out in Toronto.

Thanks to everyone who came, and as promised, we drank, danced, and dressed up! I am in the midst of collecting photos from family and friends who came by that night (will share soon).

Big week ahead... dropped off the new collection to stylists for possible TIFF opportunities, shoot photos hopefully back to unveil to all, new site to be launched this week with all the bells and whistles (including online shop), and A/W orders to be filled.

Don't know when she'll be back again... actually she's coming back soon for a certain someone's Champagne birthday and a good friend's wedding. My best friend Tanya, turned model at fittings with the patternmaker, and good eye and opinion throughout the upcoming season's looks has left me and Toronto for greener pastures. Gone for one year to Scotland to learn how to become a great teacher, we celebrated many a evenings, but this one in particular is worth mentioning... a soiree at my place with lots of good friends, food and drinks (strawberry rum punch in her hand, yummy!) laughs (and cries at 4 am). The valuable consultant she has become continues now via Skype.

Oh, and doesn't she look great in the S/S 2010 "Noir All Over" top!

I recently saw the Gucci A/W 2010 Campaign (right) in both August issues of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and had to do a double take and swatch analysis to make sure it was what I thought.

So... who did it first? Taessa Chorny or Gucci with that white spotted silk fabric? Regardless, it is flattering and reassuring to know that my careful fabric selection is in a league with one of the big guns, Gucci.

Wedding Fever!

We feel we are in the midst of a wedding rush. Putting the final touches on some bridesmaid dresses for a wedding approaching, and meeting with glowing brides-to-be this week, I am feeling the love!

With my first custom bridal gown for Michele, we met this week to discuss inspiration and begin the collaborative process of the most memorable dress in a woman's lifetime. She came well prepared with a laptop full of ideas for her winter wedding. These were my favourite three...

p.s. even though the louboutins were shown more for the cut and shape, I highly recommend all women wear a red sole shoe for their special day (it's worth the investment and comfort... and I speak from experience).

Summer Staple

Completely focused on the season approaching, I feel like this summer, more than others, has been slipping by. We know we still have a good month or so ahead of us, a few more festive occasions, cottage parties, and patio evenings. Nonetheless, our thoughts and dreams are way ahead... what you will be wearing to Christmas parties, New Year’s, and all those other fun evenings in between.

I do still get the itch to whip up a dress every now and then to go along with the realities of now… a cozy dress that I can wear downtown, on a dock by the lake, or at home. This is my favourite type of dress… not much thought needed when slipping one on… you know it can take you wherever you’re feeling for the rest of the summer (maybe that’s why my mom insisted I whip one up for her for trip to Barcelona).

From here on in, it’s all about A/W 2010… stay tuned!

Letting Go...

I'm happy to announce I have officially hired a patternmaker, named Keo. Her family has one of the last manufacturing facilities right in the heart of what was the Fashion District of downtown Toronto.

We have met a few times over the past weeks, and have begun developing my first pattern for the upcoming season (won't give away too much, but we're starting with the essential LBD aka little black dress).

I am going back for a first fitting next Tuesday and am excited to share the experience with you.

p.s. happy to be giving by neck and back a rest too... think I may have been developing a bit of an old lady hunch lately.

Is it awesome? My man suggested I consider it flattering that someone wanted a dress (or two) of mine so much that they could get in trouble for it.

I have always wanted one of these mannequins for home or my dream studio, an ever-changing platform for my artwork... just not sure if she would creep people out? Maybe not appropriate for the house... would probably scare me in the middle of the night.

Yesterday afternoon I delivered 15 new dresses (and a bouquet of wild roses from my garden) to Tabula Rasa. They are absolutely perfect for a summer wedding, cocktail party, special evening out, or lounging out on a yacht (I dream of them in Cannes).

I highly recommend this boutique for your next shopping day. Collections are featured in vignettes, St Tropez features corals, turquoise, and whitewashed looks, A Midsummer Night's Dream includes colourful florals, and An American in Paris is where my dresses hang, a mix of classic, lacy, and black and white pieces.

I will admit I delivered one week tardy, but better to be made patiently, with love, and given the attention to detail than to rush them through.

p.s. treated myself to a pair of shoes from the store, a mix between a penny loafer and deck shoes... if you like vintage shoes, Tabula Rasa is heaven for the soles!

Worth your viewing time...

Late last night, while trying to meet a deadline for a new store, we stumbled across an HBO documentary that premiered at TIFF last year, Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags.

A very worthy watch for all, the documentary details the incredible rise and subsequent destruction of New York's garment district, in less than 100 years. Old footage, photographs, and interviews remind us of a very different Seventh Avenue, where rolling racks made pedestrians watch their backs, delivery trucks crowded garment center streets, buyers perched themselves on showroom sofas as elegant models sauntered past, and tough-talking, cigar-smoking garmentos haggled for the best prices. Workers were known as knights of labor and they were proud. Today, those sidewalks are very different. Most of the prolific workshops inside the buildings have been dismantled, empty dress forms hovering like ghosts.

Recent documentaries such as Valentino: The Last Emperor and The September Issue have shown us life at the top of the fashion industry. In Schmatta, we see all the steps below. It is an eye opener to say the least...

Vacation Time

In two days, we're on vacation... to Vancouver.

For the past week, I have been laying out items I would like to bring with me... some of my new spring tops and dresses (a lace version of the "one shoulder love", a newbie design to hit the store in a few weeks, "a day at the tennis courts", and a staple for the summer, the "noir all over" jumpsuit, shoes, and hats (i love my hats)... but am quickly realizing this may be tougher than I thought...

How is a girl to pack for a vacation that includes sun, rain, beach, mountains, warm and cool... and in one suitcase? Can you believe my man suggested we share a duffle bag... excuse moi? Did he forget I typically have at least one wardrobe change per day, sometimes two....

Wardrobe and packing help needed... please.

"A Blank Slate"

I am so happy to announce my line has been picked up by a second boutique in Toronto, Tabula Rasa.

The store and Jenn (the owner) are a breath of fresh air~ modern and feminine, a gallery like set up of the clothing, with plenty of space for each piece of clothing to be admired, appreciated, and snagged up. With a mix of her hand selected vintage pieces and new and upcoming designer labels such as Alternative Apparel and Left on Houston, the boutique has a beautiful mix of what we ladies want in a shopping experience... not to mention, it's all women's lines.

After our collaborative meeting yesterday, we selected a few classic styles with colours and prints to fit the palette of Tabula Rasa and her clientele, from classic nautical stripes to soft white french lace ruffles to graphic polka dots. Long flowy dresses for hot summer nights to dainty short cocktail dresses for weddings, the store will be stocked with the first three styles of the collection June 8th, with plenty more to follow.

And did I mention, it's in my neighbourhood.

p.s... the store has an amazing backyard (Jenn and I have already chatted about a possible "Fashion's Night Out" party/show there)

A Sign

It has been an odd week... and when I have moments like this, I usually look for a sign, something to reaffirm we're on the right track and to keep going...

Had some great meetings with new clients this week about custom pieces, and to be honest, if I could spend my days doing just that, the inspiration and ideas floating around, and knowing you're in sync with someone about their designs coming to life, it is ultimate...

And saw this stop sign while biking up a street in the neighbourhood this afternoon... had to capture it and share with you... Whoever did it, I hope they put more around the city... I think we all need a bit of a sign every once in a while...

A/W 2010 Inspiration

Not sure what to make of it all... but this is what I'm feeling for next season... I think it all began a few weeks ago watching the documentary "It Might Get Loud" featuring Jimmy Page...

A bit more incubation, and then translate it into some wonderful goodies for the ladies...

On a side note, catching up on "Kell on Earth" tonight, a great quote from Kell herself I heard and had to jot down, "we don't like reality, that's why we work in fashion..."

Feeling Romantic...

Ever since I dropped off pieces to the store, and the new girl working named each design, I've been feeling romantic. Such names as "film noir" (one shoulder black ruffle dress), "one shoulder love" (one shoulder ruffle blouse), and "vive la france" (long cream and black pinstripe dress) had me buying up a lot of lace last week.

Two styles are going in the store tomorrow... the "one shoulder love" in lace and another below; long sleeved, naked shoulder, and super comfy, named "l'amour partout" (love all over). Wear it with a camisole or when you're feeling romantic, with nothing underneath.

I have had a few ladies recently requesting custom designs...
If this is you, a few tidbits of information are requested by me from you...

1. Feeling and Style~ as much as the cut is important, how you want to feel is more relevant... cute? feminine? sexy? (usually a combo of all three) When you wear a piece of clothing that gives you that feeling, somehow your troubles go away... it's true!

2. Event~ wedding, party, or just why not?

3. Fabric and Colour~ I love this part and think I am quite good and finding beautiful fabrics and selecting colours that flatter best to each lady

And the particulars...

4. Measurements~ depending on the type of design, I will need a few measurements to make this fit you, and only you.

5. Timeline~ please allow some time for this to be fun, enjoyable, memorable, and perfectly yours (a couple of weeks)

6. Budget~ ballpark figure to see what we're working with (silk or polyester)

You can do all of the above steps on your own and pass along the details, or we can meet, grab a coffee and figure it all out together... up to you, but I do prefer the getting out of my studio (aka house) bit!

Also, please keep in mind, I am not an old lady tailor who works for some big fashion house and wears a lab coat to work (referencing Valentino's documentary)... I'm like you.

Once we determine all of the above, the fun begins!

A quick side note from the world of fashion... some very sad unexpected news came to me today about a really sweet fun loving boy gone from us... and its been hitting home all evening... thoughts of family, especially my brothers...

We are all becoming more and more conscious of what, where and how we live day to day... from picking up local fruits and veggies at the farmer's market to vintage shopping for furniture and clothing to cheering on the new independent storefront in the neighbourhood... And we enjoy it!

For those who are just becoming familiar with me and my line, we are happily Made in Toronto. You'll spot me most mornings hunting through fabric shops downtown... and in the afternoons hand making each piece myself in the studio (aka the dining table when company is over)... and at the end of the week, bringing my new designs over to the market (Kensington). I get to catch up with Julian & Meg at the store and occasionally meet some new fans of the clothes or other designers and artists in the neighbourhood...

I couldn't imagine if it was the other way, missing the beauty of it all... the personal touch, the emotional attachment (it is hard for me to part with my stuff), and the smiles...

Don't get me wrong, I want this all to grow... I just need to find the best way to do it.

p.s. my man just suggested i write harlequin romance novels on the side... trust me, I want this all to grow!

FASHION'S NIGHT OUT 2010

I was just catching up on light blog reading and am not sure when it was decided, but I completely missed the announcement of Toronto being a part of Fashion's Night Out this year! Even though last year was the inaugural, and in NYC, its participation is expanding to other cities to include here, the TDot!

Long story short, for those who don't know of it, it's a Nuit Blanche for celebrating fashion... impromptu fashion shows, all night shopping all over the city, fashion exhibitions, and random moments like the Olsen sisters bartending at Bergdorf's...

I can't wait to see what Toronto will do for this evening... and how I could maybe become a part of it...

What a whirlwind of what just happened this weekend! I had such an amazing experience out of this show... I wanted to especially thank a few...

1. My man... I believe you are referenced in all of the above checkmarked and way more that aren't in there! The smile on your face just after the show is permanently imprinted with me...

2. Tanya... aka stylist, motivator, and slap some sense into me when i am in manic panic... I hope in the future she really works with me...

3. Gavin... for the awesome music!!! I am still in awe of what he composed for the runway... and hope I can pay him what he really deserved for that one day...

4. My sewing machine... I know that sounds weird... but I heard the strangest sounds out of that thing the last few weeks... thanks for not quitting on me during the 11th hour...

5. Family and Friends... for supporting me over the past months, coming out to the show... and the great times and good laughs till they kicked us out of Böhmer at 3 am...

Can't wait to do it all again... maybe next time around we'll add some more people for the ride... I'm thinking publicist, art director, and more family and friends who couldn't make it for this show.

So today is the big day... and it seems like a few months of dreaming, designing, patternmaking, and sewing have come to this... and it will all go by in a flash... to be specific, 6 minutes... That's twelve models going down a 50 ft runway in my designs...

My mama came by this morning with some really pretty flowers for me... a congrats or a good luck? A bit of both I think...

My man has been preparing me over the past few days with motivation and reality... a bit of "you might hear some criticism, some might not like it... be prepared for that" and also to remember to "enjoy the moment..."

I guess now it's all up to the models (I hope they weren't partying too hard last night), the music, the venue, and of course the clothes...

Hoping for some good feedback, would love some press, and ultimately a whole bunch of girlies falling in love with my stuff and buying it all up!

My First Runway Show

This Saturday night (April 24th) I will be unveiling my first ever runway show at Toronto's 5th Annual Alternative Fashion Week! I am feeling a combination of butterflies, knots, excitement and terror all rolled into one... Nonetheless, one of my New Year's resolutions was to try new things, especially things that frighten me... and as said above, I am scared.

On the bright side, I went in for fittings yesterday, with the help of my best friend Tanya and her mom (who was awesome at keeping it cool)... and we picked through a sea of models and selected a great mix of 12- a few angelic, a couple bad ass rockers, and a few sultry girls...

I was so relieved that I don't need to do many alterations... a few hems here and there... and I forgot, a long cream dress that is still a work in progress.

Still need to find accessories, fine tune music, create proper lookbook, and design something for myself to wear to the show... Gotta Go!

An Introduction

Hello and welcome to my blog all about my fashion line, Taessa Chorny. A little about me and how this all got started...

I've been a part of the design world for years... worked at a design firm for a year or two after school but found myself thinking more about designing the clothes I dreamed of the night before than the hotel restaurant I should have been working on... While dayjobbing at the firm, I spent my evenings making dresses for myself (and my girls)... Long story short, my loving husband told me to follow my dreams, leave the firm, and do what makes me happy...

I have since sold my dresses in a few boutiques in Toronto and am learning a whole bunch as this world of fashion lets me in...

I am excited to share my journey with you (and you with me)... And oh, I forgot, my really cute, gorgeous, sexy, and always comfortable fashion line! I must admit that as soon as a girl puts on one of my dresses something comes over her- giddiness, smiles, a cloud neuf of sorts... And I believe that's what a perfect dress should do- make you sparkle and shine... like this one below...
